Torres Legal Participates in the Attorney General's Office Mediation Month

September 25, 2023

Our managing partner, Héctor Torres, had the honor of delivering a lecture titled “The Importance of Mediation in the Public and Private Sectors” as part of Mediation Month (September) organized by the Attorney General’s Office. The lecture, which drew a distinguished audience of professionals and conflict resolution experts, delved into various aspects of this crucial topic.

During the lecture, the paradigm of conflict was addressed from a perspective that goes beyond mere resolution. Our managing partner emphasized that “the word conflict doesn’t speak for itself” and highlighted that the primary role of conflict resolution experts is to promote peace in a broader sense. The importance of dignity, freedom, equality, and the well-being of individuals and society as fundamental values in facilitating conflict resolution was emphasized.

To provide the audience with a comprehensive understanding of the characteristics of conflict for decision-making, our managing partner divided the lecture into four parts: 1) Understanding Conflicts, 2) How to Manage Conflict, 3) Theories for Managing Conflict, 4) Conflict Premises.

Understanding Conflicts:

Our expert stressed that understanding conflicts involves human knowledge and skills, encompassing comprehensive areas and subjects and relating to philosophical, biological, and psychological disciplines.

How to Manage Conflict:

Participants delved into the knowledge of conflictology and personal transformation of the principles by which we govern ourselves. Additionally, the importance of applying strategies such as negotiation, conciliation, mediation, and arbitration to effectively manage conflicts was highlighted.

Theories for Managing Conflict:

The lecture explored various theories, such as Game Theory, the Prisoner’s Dilemma, and Social Dilemma, which provide valuable insights into cooperation and the maximization of individual and social benefits. Perception Theory and Conflict Values Theory were also addressed, highlighting how knowledge can influence the perception of the other party as a rival or an enemy.

Conflict Premises:

Our attorney underscored that conflicts are not inherently positive or negative, and their proper management can turn them into opportunities for growth. Additionally, it was emphasized that poorly managed conflicts can jeopardize personal or collective projects and assets, and that conflict is an indispensable element for evolution.

Torres stated, “The lecture was an invaluable opportunity to reflect on the importance of mediation in conflict resolution. Mediation not only seeks to resolve disputes but also contributes to promoting peace and understanding in our society. It is essential to understand that conflict is a natural part of life, and learning to manage it constructively is crucial for progress in both the public and private sectors.”

Torres Legal is proud to have contributed to this important discussion and looks forward to continuing to collaborate on initiatives that promote peaceful and effective conflict resolution.
