How to be a successful lawyer in the
Legaltech industry?
September 28, 2022
The technology revolution has played a fundamental role in most of the existing business models at national and international level. In the case of legal services, digitization helped to improve care, advice and defense.
In this sense, the legal profession has evolved with the help of different technological tools. Therefore, our managing partner, Héctor Torres, shared his recommendations to achieve success in technological legal services (Legaltech) in Connecta B2B’s virtual event 100 IDEAS LEGALTECH.
For our managing partner, technology has made it possible to improve the role of law firms in terms of efficiency. That is, those mechanical, repetitive and drawer tasks can be automated and improve client service.
“What technology does is that it frees me from all these formal and practical ties that slow me down when it comes to doing a job. It gives me more time to be face to face with the client, to be able to defend him, to be able to advise him, to protect him,” he said.
Likewise, our expert explained that an important step to succeed in Legaltech is to be curious about technology. In this sense, Torres refers to the fact that “you don’t have to be an expert in programming to understand technological issues”, but it is important to understand the logic of technology.
From curiosity, one must take the step to study and professional preparation; in addition, one must select a technological area and specialize specifically in the chosen field.
However, our representative made it clear to the listeners that, although you have to have a relationship with the digital, you should not leave aside the study of law: “If I do not know the law, even if I am brutal in digital tools, I will have many problems in my cases and in serving my client. The Tech part works if you are a good lawyer, who studies and knows the substantive part of the Law”.
Likewise, Torres emphasized that one must know when to use digital processes and tools. In this way, there will be tools that will not be efficient when applied to our current work models.
“If the technology slows down my service, slows down my processes, does not allow a high level of security, then I will discard it. It is key to determine when the technology is not the best moment, but if I can see that it is going to scale over time, then it will be worth my while to put effort into it,” he stressed.
Héctor Torres, on behalf of Torres Legal, participated in 100 IDEAS LEGALTECH together with prestigious Latin American lawyers to share their contributions on Legaltech. If you want to know about future events in which the firm will participate you can follow us in our different social networks.
